Hilton Head Island Information
In the early years, Hilton Head had some of the best pine forests
and was primarily a lumbering island.
Before that, the major crops were indigo and sea island cotton.
During the Civil War the island was home to
more than 10,000 Union soldiers, used to block the Port of Savannah,
preventing the South from conducting commerce with Europe.
While in recent years, it has become a world class destination resort.

Hilton Head - Land Development In Balance With Nature
It's less than 50 years since Charles Fraser initiated
residential development of Hilton Head Island.
Fraser’s vision was a balance between nature and land development.
With his development philosophy, retaining the essential character of the island was critical
while building homes and commercial properties.
He decided to develop the island in a way
that residents and visitors could take advantage of the sea and the climate,
while still protecting the natural appeal of our beautiful Lowcountry landscapes.
The architecture was encouraged to blend with the environment.
The roads and streets were gently curved.
Commercial propety was blended in with the natural background
by minimizing the visiblity of commercial buildings, signs and space.
